Beware of Spyware!

There are many well-known factors that can cause a computer to break down - human error, mechanical failure and limited life span, to name a few.

Less obvious culprits are certain programs operating within cyberspace that have the power to cause damage to your computer sometimes resulting in a complete break down of your system. Spyware is one such problem.

What is spyware?
It is the generally accepted term for a program that, unbeknownst to you, can monitor every activity effected on your computer. Once installed, the program has the ability to track your activities and potentially gather personal details about you. Most often, spyware is utilized by software companies for marketing or advertising purposes. However, there are computer hackers who use spyware for illicit purposes. For example, by compiling information about you, they may get a hold of your credit card number. Without question, spyware is like a technical virus that can cause you major problems.

It is very difficult to detect spyware once it is installed on your computer. Generally, you need a software program like Spybot or AdAware to rid your computer system of it. However, a few precautions on your part will help you elude spyware. Be wary of suspicious downloads and remember that unless you read all of the fine print, you may well be saying yes to spyware installation. When using your work computer, be savvy about the information you provide. Give some thought to deleting your cookies; they may hold important information about your activities on the web.

Spyware and programs like it have been designed to be difficult to remove. You might find that if you try to uninstall the program on your own, it will appear again as soon as you restart your computer. Some software providers offer free or inexpensive programs that can help with spyware detection and removal. In addition, there are several internet service providers who include anti-spyware software when you sign-up for their services.

Most forms of spyware will not completely destroy your computer system. In most cases, it will annoy you, as in the case of pop-ups, but it may also negatively affect your system’s performance resulting in decreased speed or limited capabilities.
